The heart is more fickle than the songs would have you believe. You can promise forever today and mean it with all that you are, but in five months, a year, maybe more…everything has changed. It’s hard when it’s nobody’s fault, just the two of you growing apart as you grow up. Then you don’t have some huge, dramatic fight to blame the broken promises on, just two good, decent people who used to love each other and then changed their minds. Or maybe just one person moved away, while the other got left behind, and that’s even more hurtful.
From then on, you’ll start second guessing yourself, because if you were painfully wrong about something that once felt so absolutely, perfectly right, then what if you’re wrong about this, too? You can no longer trust how you feel. But eventually, if you’re lucky, maybe you’ll learn that after the heart has done its job of falling in love, you’ll need the will to stay there. Love isn’t just about feelings; it’s a day to day commitment to making it last.
When you’re young, however, it’s so difficult to let go of the myth that when you find that one person, everything will fall into place. Because it’s meant to be. Well, there is no “meant to be”. You have to make it happen. What you need is to find a person who’s worth the work of making it happen.
